How to Import a Car to Ghana Step by Step

How to Import a Car to Ghana Step by Step

The dream of owning a high-quality SUV like the Hyundai Tucson often leads many Ghanaians to look beyond our borders. Importing directly can give you access to better specifications and a clear vehicle history—if you know what you are doing.

Step 1: The Duty Calculation (Don't Start Without This!)

Before you bid on a single car at a US auction, you must know the Customs Duty. In Ghana, duties are calculated via the ICUMS system based on the car's age, engine capacity, and value. Generally, cars older than 10 years attract a penalty.

"At BestRideGH, we provide pre-purchase duty estimates so you don't buy a car you can't afford to clear."

Step 2: Sourcing from Auctions (Copart/IAAI)

Most cars imported to Ghana come from Copart or IAAI. While these auctions offer great prices, you must avoid "Flood" or "Salvage" titles unless you have a trusted repair partner. Look for "Run and Drive" verified vehicles with clean titles.

Step 3: Booking Shipping (RORO vs. Container)

You have two main options:

  • RORO (Roll-On, Roll-Off): The car is driven onto a specialized ship. It's cheaper but your car is exposed to the elements and potential pilferage.
  • Container: The car is locked in a 20ft or 40ft container. It's safer and allows you to pack some spare parts or personal items inside.

Step 4: Port Arrival and ICUMS Processing

Once the ship docks at Tema or Takoradi, your clearing agent will generate a Bill of Entry in the ICUMS system. You will receive a "Duty Amount" which must be paid at a partner bank. Once paid, the customs officials will inspect the car to verify that the specs match your declaration.

Step 5: DVLA Registration

With your customs papers in hand, head to the DVLA. You will need to pay for a roadworthy certificate, insurance, and your license plates. In 2026, the process is largely digitized, but having your physical documents ready is still essential.
