The question we get most often at BestRideGH isn't "what car should I buy?" but rather "how much will it cost to get it into my garage in Accra?" Importing a car is a multi-layered financial puzzle. Let's solve it.
1. The 'Hammer' Price (Auction Cost)
This is what you pay the auction house (Copart, IAAI, etc.). Note that there is always an Auction Fee (usually $600 - $1,200) added to your winning bid.
2. Inland Towing & Storage
The car needs to move from the auction yard to the port in the USA. Depending on the distance, this can cost between **$300 and $1,200**.
"Pro Tip: If you win a car, pay immediately. Auction yards charge storage fees of up to $50 per day for every day the car stays after the pickup window."
3. Ocean Freight (The Shipping Cost)
Shipping a sedan to Tema typically costs between **$1,500 and $2,200**, while larger SUVs like our featured **Escalade** can cost **$2,500 - $3,500** depending on the weight and size.

Negotiable4. The Big One: Customs Duty (ICUMS)
In Ghana, duty typically ranges from **30% to 55%** of the car's **CIF value** (Cost + Insurance + Freight).
- Import Duty: 20% of CIF.
- Import VAT: 15% of (CIF + Duty + Other taxes).
- Over-age Penalty: If the car is older than 10 years, you pay an extra fee.
5. Port Handling & Clearing Fees
The GPHA (Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority) charges for handling your vehicle. Along with your agent's fee, expect to pay between **GH₵ 3,000 and GH₵ 6,000** for this stage.
6. Local Registration (DVLA)
Final roadworthy, insurance, and license plates. For a standard sedan, this is roughly **GH₵ 1,500 - GH₵ 2,500**.
"Reliability isn't just about the car; it's about the financial plan behind it. Import with confidence."
